Either I was focused on $8 hippy beer purchases, or getting a bit toasty.īEST FOOD ON A PATIO: Flat Branch Brewery, 5th & Locust-ishįlat Branch was packed inside and LOUD beyond normal, so we jumped on the wait list for the patio, were given a “pager” and wandered off to drink somewhere else until it went off. Bingo! … btw, my cheapo draught was really good. Dang! I wanted one of those $8 beers! Shortly, a guy who looked a little more “well-off” than “hippy”, but sounded “hippy”, sat next to me and ordered some sort of ale, with a side of carbonated water (?), and I was vicariously thrilled when the bartender brought the two bubbly glasses and told him, “Eight-fifty”. We parked at the bar, and I ordered a good-looking draught choice, and was disappointed when the bartender served and said, “Three-fifty”. The food and the theatre outshine the bar and patio here, though patio-wise I am unable to report because the July sun was too brutal on their west-facing (and a little north) unshaded concrete slab. I’d much rather be holed up in the huge billiards room inside, with - ah, yes - snooker!īEST $8 HIPPY BEER: Uprise Bakery, Hitt St. There was a lot of activity outside, but mostly just cars driving by, including a fire truck and ambulance that about blew us off the porch. They also have big ceiling fans out there, but inexplicably did not have them turned on in July (must be saving them for August, when it’s really hot). There are big screen TV’s under the recessed area, so we got to catch some of the Cardinals game. Willie’s has kind of an entry way patio, which runs along the whole front of the Field House, but is long and narrow. PMS: Good mix of tunes, at a level you could hear, but still talk over with ease.īEST PATIO NEAR GREAT POOL ROOM: Willie’s / Field House, Broadway & Hitt St. Would have liked to come here before the parking garage and the woody tower. There are nice jib-style shades strung above the deck, and there is a bar with a sweet marble top right out near the corner. Harpo’s rooftop had a little of the pizzazz of Quinton’s, and the street angle of Campus, but with none of the view - not nature, not street show … just a really big parking garage, made to look almost like it is something other than a parking garage, but not quite, and a great big office building that they put a bunch on wood on the outside of, apparently in hopes you wouldn’t notice that it was way too tall for the neighborhood and blocked all the view. Too busy watching the passing show to notice if there were tunes. Excellent drinker’s bar, inside and out, and maybe my favorite. Not a fancy place, but there were shade umbrellas. Cars, bikes, scooters, pedestrians … it is a non-stop show.

This was the best sneaky people-watching place in town. Not at all dramatic, and not at all high, but perched right above the bustling intersection at the edge of campus (hence the name, you think?). Mellow volume, fairly up-to-date mix.īEST VOYEURISTIC STREET VIEW: Campus, 9th & Elm SSI (Server Snootiness Index): Middling servers a tad snooty, but not too bad. The big mid-level deck area could use some umbrellas or shades of some sort, at least in the dead of summer. Great views of the architecture and forestry of The District, though The District itself is far below, out of sight. Note that the judge’s perception of some bars may have been affected by time spent at prior bars.īEST VIEW OF TREETOPS, SPIRES AND SKY: Quinton’s, 9th & Locustĭramatic rooftop-and-beyond decks reach multiple levels above the buildings. Not much new here, just another view, maybe.Ĭolumbia, MO Rooftop (and non-rooftop) Bar RatingsĪ highly unscientific study … We couldn’t live through a visit to ALL the bars listed by cardinal5 (though we tried), so we took advantage of fairly mild weather (for July) and hit a lot of rooftops and patios, and darted inside a few places, just ‘cuz. overdone, as most things I'm involved with:Īs a public service, and to complement the excellent work of cardinal5, I submit the following review of visits to some of the bars in The District. Reply to cardinal5's guide to bars in The District, from the "Best Restaurants" thread.
